At Teixeiro prison in northwestern Spain, male and female inmates work, eat and exercise side-by-side in what is one of Europe’s few mixed-gender correctional facilities. Prison managers say the system helps promote rehabilitation by better replicating life in the outside world and now the Spanish government wants to expand the programme.
