France defence council meets on wildfire plans
(11 Aug 2016) The French Interior Minister said on Thursday that four firemen have been injured – three of them seriously – in wildfires which scorched through two southern towns in the country.
At a news conference at the Elysee Palace, Bernard Cazeneuve said aircraft were being deployed to ensure the fire, which ruined homes and at least one school forcing hundreds of people to be evacuated, did not spread to other areas.
Major highways shut down to make way for firefighters streaming to the area, and the Marseille airport rerouted incoming flights to clear the skies for firefighting aircraft.
With winds still high, authorities said Thursday the danger was not over for some nearby French towns but the fires were under control.
Hundreds of evacuees spent the night in gymnasiums, and by mid-morning in Pennes-Mirabeau and Vitrolles, city officials were taking stock of the damage.
