Operation Opera was an Israeli airstrike on June 7, 1981, targeting Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor, believed to be for nuclear weapons development. Eight F-16s, escorted by six F-15s, flew over 2,000 kilometers, crossing Jordanian and Saudi airspace to bomb the reactor. The mission successfully crippled Iraq’s nuclear program. While internationally condemned, including a UN Security Council resolution against it, Israel viewed the operation as a necessary preemptive measure to ensure national security. The strike delayed Iraq’s nuclear ambitions, significantly impacting regional dynamics and serving as a precedent for preemptive military actions against potential nuclear threats.
