Macron condemns Israeli army for targeting UN peacekeepers | ABS-CBN News
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the recent targeting of the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, by the Israel Defence Forces during a summit with leaders of nine European Union member states in the Mediterranean on Friday (October 11).
Two U.N. peacekeepers were injured on Friday by an Israeli strike near their watchtower in south Lebanon, the Israeli military said, while blasts shook the peacekeepers’ main base in the area for the second time in 48 hours as Israeli forces battled Hezbollah.
“It is therefore totally unacceptable to see UNIFIL troops deliberately targeted by the Israeli armed forces. We condemn it, we will not tolerate it and will not tolerate it happening again,” Macron said.
The Israeli military expressed “deep concern” and said two peacekeepers had been injured by Israeli fire as it was engaging Hezbollah. It said they had been warned hours earlier to take shelter. The United Nations said both were from Sri Lanka. – report from Reuters
