Cops. The thin blue line. The good guys with a gun. The story the media tends to tell about the police in this country is one of valor, honor and service, even after an event where members of the police force were not the good guys. Instead, they’re, the complicated not-so-good guys or a few bad apples in an otherwise immaculate bunch. The U.S. media constantly recycles spins like these as part of an intentional pattern with its own set of editorial and narrative rules. In this episode of “Backspace,” Sana Saeed looks at how the police are imagined in headlines, film and TV and suggests a different angle, one that hold police accountable instead of parroting and protecting them.
